ROLES & QUALIFICATIONS:
Child Welfare professionals provide first-response services to children, youth and families. They investigate claims of abuse and maltreatment, assess risks and act to protect children in need. Child welfare professionals also support children and their families, place children in foster or group homes and find suitable adoptive families for children in care when appropriate.
Child Protection Workers – After Hours, Intake, Ongoing, Children’s Services, Resources, Kinship & Adoption
As an After Hours Intake Worker, you will provide child protection services during after hours on a rotating basis. You will be responsible for receiving referrals related to child protection issues and all request for services involving children in care.
As an Intake Worker, you will conduct child protection investigations on assigned cases and develop case plans for files to be transferred for ongoing service.
As an Ongoing Worker, you will develop, implement, and evaluate case plans and risk assessments for families who have identified child protection needs, deliver creative solutions to ever-changing family problems, plan for interventions, and participate in the legal aspects of child welfare.
As a Children Services Worker, you will be required to supervise and provide casework services to assigned children in foster home placements as well as provide consultation and support to the foster family. You will liaise with collateral resources, complete relevant court forms, provide testimony in court and record all activities as required.
As a Resource Worker you will participate in foster parent recruitment efforts, conduct family assessments, prepare for and facilitate training groups. You will work on a one-to-one basis with foster families to provide support and supervision. You will also plan and secure placements for children in consultation with Family Services & Children’s Services Workers.
As a Kinship Worker you will be responsible for conducting assessments using a strength-based family and systems approach of prospective kin with respect to their abilities to care for a child or youth.
As an Adoption Worker you will participate in assessment of potential adoptive families, match children and adoptive families based on the needs of the child as well as monitor and support the families until the adoption is finalized.
Qualifications for Child Protection Worker
- Bachelor of Social Work Degree from a recognized University or similar degree with a focus on working with Children & Families
- Effective assessment, interviewing, relationship building, problem solving & organization skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Valid Class G Ontario Drivers Licence, $1M Insurance Liability and daily access to a vehicle
- Excellent computer and keyboarding skills
- Public speaking or presentation skills are desirable
Child & Youth Workers and Family Support Workers
Child & Youth Workers work with Resource Families to support the placement of the child by providing instruction and support on how to manage behaviours. Family Support Workers work with families when the child is still in the home to address behaviour or parenting issues.
- Child & Youth Worker Diploma from a recognized community college
- Behaviour management group work skills
- Effective assessment, interviewing, relationship building, problem solving & organization skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to manage crisis or conflictual situations
- Valid Class G Ontario Drivers Licence, $1M Insurance Liability and daily access to a vehicle
- Excellent computer and keyboarding skills
Child Care Workers (Residential Worker)
- Child & Youth Worker Diploma from a recognized community college or related degree is required as well as a minimum two years relevant experience and a demonstrated ability to work independently.
- The candidate must be mature, responsible and able to work within the philosophy of the program.
- Effective assessment, interviewing, relationship building, problem solving & organization skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Administration Staff
- A Community College two-year diploma or equivalent in Business or Commercial studies.
- At least two years experience preferably within a child welfare or non-profit environment.
- Excellent computer skills and experience with a variety of applications, Lotus notes would be desirable.
- Demonstrated organization, interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Knowledge of the Child & Family Service Act would be a definite asset.

Field Placement Opportunities:
The society provides placements opportunities for students who are enrolled in a variety of post secondary education programs such as social work, child and youth worker, social services worker, autism and behaviour sciences, behaviour science technology, information technology, and administration.
Summer Student Job Opportunities:
Each year we hire students to assist our Child Protection Workers as Summer Case Aides. Duties include assisting workers with home visits, providing information and answering question, completing case notes and well as the occasional special project. Candidates must be returning to school in the fall and be enrolled in a post secondary program such as those listed above. We begin accepting resumes for summer positions in February.
All student chosen for placement or summer work, must provide the Society with a completed Criminal Reference Check including a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check (this is a check for sexual offences for which a pardon has been granted or issued), proof of a valid Ontario Drivers License, possess a minimum of $1,000,000 liability vehicle insurance and access to a reliable vehicle that meets the required safety standards in the province. The cost of the record(s) is the responsibility of the student.

Most are located in one of the numerous conservation areas ready for you to explore including Sidney, Quinte, Macaulay Mountain and Presqu'ile. Belleville's paved waterfront trail is ideal for rollerblading or parents with strollers.
